Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is FDA-approved to fuse bones and has been cleared in certain devices to reduce swelling and joint pain. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) work on the same physics.

This therapy has been used to treat pain and edema in soft tissue for over 60 years. The technology stemmed from radio frequency (RF) diathermy, which utilized a continuous electromagnetic field to produce heat in soft tissue.

A moving – or resonating – magnetic field can create currents without heating and thus directly alter cellular signaling. It has been firmly established that tissues including blood, muscle, ligaments, bone and cartilage respond to biophysical input, including electrical and electromagnetic fields. New studies show that with the proper field intensity and frequency, treatment with PEMF appears to be disease-modifying. The stimulation of TGFβ may be a mechanism by which PEMF favorably affects cartilage homeostasis. Through calcium-calmodulin-dependent pathways, PEMF may also increase nitric oxide activity.

PEMF Mat Devices

On the show, world-class pain specialist Dr. James Dillard mentioned electromagnetic portable pads to Dr. Oz. These mats produce a therapeutic pulsed electromagnetic field that can surround the entire body. They are not FDA-approved and are not made in the USA. PEMF mats are primarily advertised and distributed over the Internet, often used without medical supervision. Retail price is $2000 to $3000, and often renting is possible for a weekly rate. There are a dozen different companies that make these devices. Three examples are the Mediconsult iMRS MRS2000, Medithera Home System, and Quantron Resonance System QRS-101.

PEMF Knee Device

Also on the show, family physician Dr. William Pawluk discussed the OrthoCor Active Knee System. This is an FDA-approved device that combines PEMF energy and thermal therapy to increase circulation and thus reduce swelling, relieve chronic pain and arthritis, as well as improve range of motion. The device’s technology consists of a cuff that surrounds the knee. It has a coil and heat pods that send magnetic pulses and heat through the injured tissue. Patients can walk while the OrthoCor device is in operation. OrthoCor sells its products through orthopedic clinics, physicians and health care practitioners.

PEMF Patch Devices

Dr. Pawluk also introduced a small, disposable PEMF device called Acti-Patch by Bioelectronics Corp. In Canada, ActiPatch is a Class II device and is sold over-the-counter. Health Canada has approved it for relief of musculoskeletal pain. It is not FDA-approved for musculoskeletal pain, so the efficacy of these patches is still unclear. It may have some benefit with superficial pain and edema.

Pole Reversal Possible?

A pole shift is sometimes confused with a pole reversal, in which the magnetic poles switch places, so that north becomes south and vice-versa. From studying the magnetism of ancient rocks, scientists have learned that pole reversals have occurred at irregular intervals throughout the Earth’s history, on average about once every 300,000 years.

The last was about 780,000 years ago. According to University of California professor Gary Glatzmaier, who has modeled the phenomenon with a supercomputer, pole reversals are the result of the movement of molten iron in the Earth’s outer core, which can cause twists in the planet’s magnetic field.

Pole reversals take place over thousands of years, during which time magnetic poles can show up in strange places — the magnetic north pole, for example, might suddenly show up on the island of Tahiti in the Pacific. Recently, some have pointed to magnetic field disturbances an area known as the South Atlantic Anomaly as a possible sign of an upcoming pole reversal — which conceivably could even occur in 2012, to the likely delight of apocalyptic believers — though scientists warn that it is not likely.

If a pole reversal did happen, according to Stanford University geophysicist Norm Sleep, it might cause some strange phenomena. Auroras would be visible at the equator instead of the poles, compasses would cease to be reliable, and radio transmissions would be adversely effected. Cosmic rays might pierce the Earth’s atmosphere more easily. Overall, though, life would still go on.

The Need for Earth-Based PEMF

Well that’s the opinion of ONE scientist. Based on the NASA zero field studies and the known need for Earth Based PEMF (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields), if this event does happen in our lifetime, it would be wise to have a PEMF device like the MRS 2000.

Actually over the past 300-500 years it is known that the earth’s magnetic field has decreased by about 50%, so even if we don’t experience a polar reversal, it is still a wise investment.

Carl Landis MRS 2000 Testimonial

I am a Masters’ runner, age 68, specializing in indoor track.  At the 2009 USA National Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships in Landover, MD, I ran a 6:04 mile and a 2:45 half-mile.  This was good for fourth place in both events.

I missed the 2010 indoor season because of chronic soreness in my hamstrings.  Nothing seemed to help permanently—neither chiropractic nor pain relievers.  I purchased the MRS 2000+ designo on July 18, 2010 just to experiment, and not specifically for the hamstring problem.

Within a week’s time I began noticing an improvement in the hamstring soreness.  I also noticed that I was not as tired after my workouts.  After a month, the tightness was completely gone.  I still experienced some slight hip pain, however, but it was much improved from when I began.

Exactly two months later, on September 18, I ran a 5K race.  This was the first time I had competed in 1 ½ years.  I ran the 5K in 21:49, which was a good minute faster than I had antici-pated.

Since I have been using the mat I have observed that my running is much smoother and more effortless.  This running flow is something I haven’t experienced in years!

New Control Unit for the iMRS 2000

There are several new changes from the old MRS 2000 system. First, the new iMRS is totally digital and programmable with considerable more flexibility in adding options and upgrading. It uses SD card technology, which allows a lot of memory to be stored on a small chip. This new system is smaller, sleeker and digital whereas the old system is solid state and larger.

I had a chance to see the new iMRS system at a launch event in San Diego.

Upon looking at the iMRS wellness system, it is very small and elegant and the outer housing has a very nice skin-like feel. According to the CEO of the Company, Wolfgang Jaksch, the stingray fish inspires the design. Stingrays have very advanced sensory organs that actually detect electromagnetic fields. This is a very fitting design and very nice looking too.

The new display is now totally digital with a self-lit blue screen and very user friendly. It is very nice that you can plug the applicators into any outlet on the back and the system atomically detects which applicator is plugged in and displays a small picture of the applicator. There are also programming features that allow different members of a household to set their own customized program.

The applicators are also upgraded and higher quality. Using a cool metallic grey color, they are nicer looking too. The whole body mat additionally has perforations making the mat much easier to fold. And the probe applicator on the new iMRS has a 100% anodized steel shield making it incredibly durable. Also the new probe boasts a 400% increase in intensity on the highest level.

And all the units use solid durable copper wires that produce the purest and cleanest signals available on any unit on the market. This is a very important feature of the MRS2000 and the new iMRS versus other systems on the market.

The MRS2000+ is one of ONLY two end user PEMF models registered with the FDA and the other device is $25,000!

The MRS 2000 Plus which is also called the MRS 2000+ Designo or just “MRS 2000″ for short is the newest incarnation of the worldwide bestseller in pulsed magnetic therapy (PEMF Therapy).
